Smashing Color I: Integrating Art & Science

Smashing Color I: Integrating Art & Science

with Maggie Maggio

Saturday, Sep 13, 2014, 9:00am – 1:00pm

Forget the rules. Throw out the color wheel. Its time to rethink everything you thought you knew about color. Why?  Because most color theory is simplistic, misleading, confusing or just plain wrong.  Come play with color just for the fun of it as we “smash” traditional theories and replace them with the latest information about color in the 21st century. Learn to see color in a new way as you study the properties of color, identify your unique preferences for color temperature, contrast and composition, and explore the many ways to mix color using Maggie’s instinctive Mixing Map to guide the way. Train your eye to see the nuances in colors by playing with a prism and sorting colors. Learning the basics of both additive and subtractive color mixing systems by playing with a computer and with polymer clay. Build up your color foundation with basic information about the chemistry, optics and psychology of color. Leave with a new understanding of the complexity of color and an appreciation for where each color lives in the inconnected system that is the color world. Note: Color is one of the most important elements in design. This four hour workshop is the first in a series of new classes designed to cover the full range of information you need to use color effectively in your work. Polymer clay will be used for the exercises but this workshop is open to artists working in all media. Maggie Maggio’s Mixing Map is a different and fabulously easy way to learn to mix colors. Even if you are an experienced mixer, you will learn to see color in a whole new way! Additional Information Experience Level: All levels. No experience with polymer clay is necessary. Minimum Students: 3  Maximum Students: 10 Materials Cost: $5 for polymer clay, handouts, and shared supplies to be paid in cash the day of the class Class Fee: $50 Location: VIA Artistica, Second Floor, TaborSpace, 5441 SE Belmont, Portland
